Problem

The Problem

Senegal loses over 30% of its fish, milk, and fresh vegetable production each year due to a lack of reliable cold chain between production areas and urban markets. Fish caught in Saint-Louis or Mbour often arrives spoiled in Dakar for lack of an available or affordable refrigerated truck. Small dairy producers in the Kolda and Thiès regions cannot sell their production to Dakar dairies, generating massive losses. Existing refrigerated trucks are too expensive for small producers and often travel half empty.

The Opportunity

The FAO estimates post-harvest losses in West Africa at $40 billion per year, much of which is preventable through better cold chain infrastructure. The Senegalese government funds up to 40% of cold chain equipment under the Food Sovereignty Plan. Pooling refrigerated trucks via a digital platform can reduce the cost per producer by 60% while improving vehicle utilization rates.

The Concept

FreshChain SN operates a fleet of 10 refrigerated trucks and 5 static isothermal containers (relay warehouses) positioned on key producer-market routes (Saint-Louis → Dakar, Kolda → Thiès, Mbour → Dakar). A mobile app lets producers book space in a partial truck (by pallet or crate), like a Blablacar for cold transport. The algorithm optimizes routes to maximize fill rates. Temperatures are monitored in real time via IoT sensors and the client receives an alert if the cold chain is broken. Restaurants, hotels, and supermarkets can subscribe to a guaranteed weekly fresh produce supply.

The "Secret Sauce" (USP)

  • Cold Blablacar model: producers share a truck by pallet — cost divided by 4 for each producer, 90% fill rate for FreshChain, unprecedented win-win model in African cold logistics
  • Real-time cold chain break alert: IoT sensors in each compartment with SMS notification to producer and recipient if temperature exceeds threshold — proven liability and automatic compensation
  • Integrated PRACAS/PSA subsidy: FreshChain has pre-structured government subsidy files for its producer clients — immediate access to public funding that makes the service cost almost zero for small producers
