AI conversational learning app for Senegalese and African languages (Wolof, Pulaar, Diola, Mandinka), designed for the diaspora, expatriates, and international companies.
The Problem
Over 700,000 Senegalese diaspora members are raising children who no longer speak Wolof or Pulaar, progressively losing the linguistic and cultural connection to their roots. The 20,000 expatriates living in Dakar find no structured resource to learn Wolof, hindering their professional and social integration. International companies (banks, NGOs, mining groups) deploying employees to Senegal have no local language training solution to offer their teams.
The Opportunity
The global language learning app market (Duolingo, Babbel) is worth $15 billion but covers virtually no African languages. The 10 million Africans of the diaspora in Europe are ready to pay to preserve their children's mother tongue. Generative AI (multilingual LLM models) now makes it possible to create conversational tutors in low-resource languages at a fraction of the cost of 3 years ago.
The Concept
LerëLang is a Duolingo-style mobile app enriched with an AI conversational tutor capable of responding in Wolof, Pulaar, Diola, and Mandinka. The learner chooses their profile (beginner diaspora, Dakar expatriate, bilingual child, professional) and follows an adaptive 10-minute daily path. Dialogues from real Senegalese situations (market, grin, family ceremony, office) make learning culturally grounded. A 'simulated call' mode with the AI in Wolof immerses the learner in an authentic conversation. Companies can subscribe to a corporate plan offering licenses to their expatriate teams with an HR progress tracking dashboard.
The "Secret Sauce" (USP)
- Native Wolof AI conversational tutor: the first chatbot that responds in correct Wolof with dialectal variants from Dakar, Saint-Louis, and Ziguinchor — no equivalent in any mainstream global app
- 'Simulated call' mode culturally grounded: simulate a phone call with a Dakar mother-in-law or a Sandaga market seller — emotional immersion that embeds vocabulary far better than flashcards
- Corporate expatriate plan: HR managers at Total, BOAD, Orange, and embassies pay to train their teams — high-value recurring B2B market contracted for 1 to 3 years
Minimum Viable Product (MVP)
To get started quickly:Android mobile app with Wolof module only (500 words, 30 lessons, fine-tuned GPT-4 mini AI tutor), tested with 300 diaspora beta users in France and 50 expatriates in Dakar for 8 weeks.
